PGWP processing time

If you apply for your post-graduation work permit (PGWP) from inside Canada, IRCC currently lists a processing time of 16 weeks. If you apply from another country, the wait depends on where you are. IRCC may change these times, so check them before you plan around them.

Figures from IRCC's processing times tool, which IRCC updates weekly. Outside Canada, the time depends on the country you apply from.

Applying from inside Canada

The 16-week estimate is for work permit applications made from inside Canada, including PGWP applications, and it counts from the day IRCC gets your complete application.

Extending a work permit you already hold is separate. IRCC lists 121 days for that kind of application made inside Canada. If this is your first PGWP, the 16-week figure is the one that applies to you, not the 121 days.

Why the posted time is only an estimate

The listed number is an estimate, not a promise. IRCC says the posted figures are not a maximum or a guarantee. Your case may take more time than the figure shown.

The estimate reflects how long IRCC thinks it will need for a file if it receives it today. IRCC looks at the inventory, meaning applications already waiting, the staff assigned to this category, and the number of new applications it expects to receive.

IRCC also reports historical processing times, which describe past applications rather than predict the wait for a new one. They show how long it took to process 80% of similar applications in the past, looking back over 8 to 16 weeks for temporary residence applications.

Waiting longer than the posted time, or your study permit is about to run out?

Applying from outside Canada

At this time, IRCC is not finalizing files submitted from DR Congo, Uganda, or South Sudan. Applications from those countries can take more time.

When the waiting time begins

The clock starts when IRCC receives your complete application. It stops when IRCC reaches a decision. For an online application, the start date is the day you submit.

The posted time already includes biometrics (your fingerprints and photo), so you don't need to add extra weeks for that step.

Why do some applications take longer?

Your application can take longer if something is missing, if your case is complicated, or if it needs extra security checks. Even a complete, straightforward application can run past the posted time.

IRCC says calling won't help make the decision come sooner.

Working while you wait

You may be able to work full-time while waiting for your PGWP decision, depending on whether you met IRCC's conditions when you applied. One requirement is holding a valid study permit. Another is that you did not go over 24 hours a week of off-campus work during academic sessions.

IRCC may send a letter known as the WP-EXT for PGWP (IMM 0127 E). It confirms you can work while your application is being decided. If you met the conditions for working while you wait, the letter lets you keep working until IRCC makes a decision, even after its 180-day validity date passes.

Following your application status

Once IRCC receives your file and confirms it is complete, it sends an acknowledgement of receipt. That message confirms your application has arrived and the waiting time has started.

To watch what happens next, try IRCC's Application status tracker. It provides a timeline and often shows more steps than the account page itself.
